I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Company is moving in the right direction with a clearer articulation of our portfolio of products, both internally and to the investment community. Enjoy my work team, and work-life balance can be achieved here. As a Bay Area employee, I love that the company still hosts an annual Christmas Gala at San Francisco City Hall, as well as the annual summer picnic in Menlo Park.

Cons

Need more (frequent) communication to employees. San Francisco office is very cramped for space - hoping that the new office will address this.

Advice to Management

Need more departmental and company-wide all-hands meetings to keep employees informed, especially as we move to the next evolution of our company.

    Pros

Great people, although that can vary widely depending on the group you're in. Exciting technology that's constantly evolving and improving. You won't get bored working for Riverbed.

    Cons

You may not get bored, but in the last couple of years the company shed the last vestiges of its startup origins and became more like Another Big Company. Lots of product line expansion, but stingy hiring outside of Engineering, Sales and Marketing. OTOH, lots of middle managers have been hired, to the detriment of many teams and to the overall work culture. In some groups, you're only as good as your last deliverable, never mind that you've established a solid record of excellent work spanning multiple years.

[This review is for the San Francisco HQ - other offices in the US and overseas are different, YMMV]

The CEO has gone through several phases where he patrols the building in the afternoon, counting empty desks. Several senior VPs have followed suit. He has also camped out in the lobby and counted Riverbed employees leaving early (in his judgement). The reality, at least in SF, is that management equates being a good employee with being visibly present at your desk. Never mind that many people work extra hours at home and on weekends, or that they come in extra-early so that they can leave early enough to attend to personal business (e.g. picking up a child). The implicit message is that management doesn't trust employees to put in a full day's work. When I started there over five years ago, the important thing was doing your job and doing it well, not obsessing over when you arrive and when you leave. Now it's very different.

    Advice to Management

Don't keep expecting people to just work harder every time the product line expands, especially after an acquisition. Hire enough non-engineering technical staff to fully support all of the various initiatives. Require skip-level meetings for all people managers, including executives. Require 360 feedback for all people managers and address problem managers swiftly. Remember that having a bad manager is one of the most common causes for employees to leave, so do something about it.

I have been working at Riverbed Technology full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work wise it is ok, just like any bay area tech company.
Some work can be challenging with some amount of flexibility typical of any software company around.

    Cons

As the title mentions, low salary and bonus than the big software companies. But the stock is not doing well, so no advantages of being in a small company.
