Pros

- Remote working. - Flexible hours. - Competitive Salary. - Friendly and supportive staff (except the CEO.)

Cons

There is a heavy, top-down culture of micro-management at Rockpool. This is led by the CEO, who despite running the company for almost 20 years, is still the acting Product Manager for both development teams in the company, with an emphasis on minutely managing every task and fixating on strict timescales. If a task overruns for whatever reason, Daily Stand-up is used as a medium to name and shame in front of the whole team. This causes a lot of fear and discontent in the team, as well as a healthy churn of staff. The CEO is sadly an incompetent manager who despite his best efforts to control every aspect in the company, is seeing numerous errors and struggles. There is a lack of critical documentation and automation for many processes in the company, and many of the ways of working are antiquated. Staff are often so fixated on completing tasks within strict deadlines, that they miss the big picture of how to improve processes and innovate. Due to this, critical errors have slipped through in to production which have had a huge impact on the team and staff. The CEO would also make constant threats to staff, frequently stating "If you don't follow this, there will be consequences". The company seems to be struggling with retaining contracts and seeing success in other ventures, so I can only presume it is the CEO venting his frustration on to staff.

Pros

Rockpool is unique about private agencies in that everything is extremely transparent. Given the founder is still the owner this company the level of transparency is far and above any other agency both big and small. Being private there is also a big push to invest in both clients and employees.

Cons

Keep fostering a way for legacy Rockpool employees to mentor new ones.

Thanks for the positive comments. We try to be very open with everyone in the company on how we’re performing as a business. This means we can celebrate together in the good times, and pull together in the more difficult times. Hopefully the buddy programme for all new starters will help established Rockpool employees pass on knowledge to new joiners.

Pros

Joining Rockpool means getting plunged head first into work. It's great for people that are eager to learn, want to boost their career and really get stuck in. You will learn quickly, and lots. Responsibility is ramped up according to what management think you can handle, and you can always ask for help and support (which will be given) if you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure. The teams in Rockpool are all well thought out, and all work excellently together both within teams and across the teams. The flat hierarchy is quite different than a lot of other software development places, and creates a feeling of mutual respect amongst colleagues. Benefits are great, there's plenty of team and company outings, loads of benefits to support your activities outside of work, and the flexible working is not just a name, but is actively enforced within the company so that if you prefer starting or finishing earlier, as long as you're getting your work done and attending meetings, it's really not watched. You also get a personal development fund and time, which is excellent to take courses to boost your work.

Cons

Responsibility and taking ownership of work is a huge thing in Rockpool. If you're not comfortable working to close deadlines, potentially putting in the extra hours to make sure client needs are met, and also facing consequences (nothing major but it will be brought up) if you say you will do something and don't, then this isn't the place for you. It's not a place to skate by in the background, but a place to really excel and take ownership of your work.
