I worked at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Good Benefits: 401k match, vacation, winter shutdown between christmas and new years, excellent bonus structure.

Cons

A bigger company with some people that needed to be fired but just get shuffled around instead. Was expected to work more than 40 hours/week on a regular basis without overtime pay, although bonus checks were awarded in special cases.

Advice to Management

Get rid of the people you don't want instead of pawning them off on another group.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Work Life Balance is amazing. There is a company-wide shutdown between Christmas and New Year's, on top of the 3 week vacation you start with.

    - You can get by doing no meaningful work for years and you will not get fired. If this is your thing then this is a Pro.

    - Nice colleagues that respect each other for the most part.

    - It is cool to tell people that you build planes. The wow factor.

    - Tuition Reimbursement.

    - Cheap housing in the Cedar Rapids area.

    Cons

    - Extremely low pay for good software engineers. It might be comparable to other companies in the avionics industry, but there is no reason for a software engineer to be "stuck" to the avionics industry. You can easily get 30% more at other reputable companies in other fields.

    - The location is horrible. Please listen to the following carefully: if you are not from the Midwest ( born and raise ) or if you do not have family in Cedar Rapids, then stay away. Winters are long and harsh ( can get to -25 F ). Summers are wet, hot and humid, often with flooding. There is not much going on, no nightlife. Definitely not a place for young people or singles. Oh, and the city smells. The city actually was one of the top 10 worst cities to live in in America. A quick search online can validate my claims.

    - For foreign nationals, they recently came up with a new rule to make all foreign hires wait 4 years before sponsoring them for the green card!!

    - Promotions are extremely hard, unless you are part of the old boy's club. They are certainly not based on performance so don't even try.

    - Benefits have been on a steady decline for the past 5 years. They increased the cost of health care and slashed their 401k matching.

    - Yearly merit increases of 2% have been the norm for the past 5 years. If you complain you are told by management to "be thankful that you have a job in this economy"!

    - Repetitive work. Given that you will be working in the avionics field, there is so much red tape and many convoluted processes that you have to go through. You will spend 20% of your time doing technical work and writing code and 80% of your time preparing artifacts and dealing with audits and processes. you will not be working on cutting edge technology. Often you will be maintaining code written 10-20 years ago.

    - Rockwell Collins does not value its employees. They keep hiring good people but they keep losing them after a few years because they do not take care of their employees.

    Advice to Management

Look what other successful companies are doing to retain talent, and start from there.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

These are top five elements i like it here.
    - people interaction (Communities of Practice sessions)
    - technology ( some products have nice hi-tech stuff)
    - trainings ( award winning Intstructor led trainings)
    - open communication
    - internal growth opportunities

    Cons

    * Rockwell serves only Aerospace products and during economic downturns it impacts bottomline.
    * Too much Process burden on onboard products-archacic

    Advice to Management

Expand product portfolio in other adjacent markets
