I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

Sometimes you get to do real engineering. Great location in Cedar Rapids for raising a family.

Cons

Very slow to adapt new technology. Very risk adverse due to the nature of the business but not fun for new college grads as it will bring them back a dozen years or so in technology. Not really Rockwell's fault but more the FAA and the avionics biz

Advice to Management

This used to be an engineering company and now it's ran by PMs. Only PMs get promoted and there is very limited growth for engineers unless you move into management. No real "chief" engineers and no Fellow program.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Access to a diverse set of programs and technologies, and normally a very good environment where you are treated as a professional and allowed a flexible work schedule.

    Cons

Jumping through hoops to get funding for new ideas, and sometimes a slow cycle of new developments.

    Advice to Management

Do not be so risk averse in decision making.

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good technological place to work. Co-workers are professional. Lots of opportunities to move around.

    Cons

Some positions require many hours continuously. You compete with the entire company at your grade level for compensation and advancement; if you're not careful, this can be bad due to limited opportunities to show skills, not necessarily due to lack of work ethic, motivation, etc.

    Advice to Management

Don't pigeon-hole employees; keep them moving onward/upward if they want to advance.
