I have been working at Rockwell Collins as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

Pay is straight
Benefits is cool
Networking is cool

Cons

As a co-op/intern you find yourself having to beg for work all the time and when somebody does have work it isn't nothing but some crap they didn't want to do themselves. Bored all the time because there is never really any valuable work. Getting paid to do nothing. I can go on and on. I've heard this from many other co-op/interns so it is definitely levels to this

Advice to Management

Just stop it, ok. Stop it. Its levels to this..

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Integrity, Loyalty to employees (at least at a personal level), great community of excellent engineers, fun and challenging work, great customer focus.

    Cons

Expensive High Deductible health care, Salary Compression after many years service, limited upward mobility unless in Cedar Rapids.

    Advice to Management

Figure out how to give substantial raises (5-10%) every 4-5 years or you'll lose folks. 2.5% doesn't build loyalty.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Rockwell Collins full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Stability in core product engineering areas- which pretty much has not changed in the last 20 years
Less work pressure if you know how to avoid taking on risky assignments
People are generally not very bright so you can make do with very less effort.

    Cons

Management is feeling the pressure with very high attrition rate. They are clueless, and I have personally been in countless 'voice of employee' meetings to do a 'root cause analysis' but they still do not get it
Company is not growing, and project bids are rejected for technical reasons.
They realize Cedar Rapids is not a first choice for many people, but still do not do anything to attract top talent.
Nor there is any need to have extremely qualified people in the company since the job is boring and pedestrian.

    Advice to Management

Fire the old guard all they know if bureaucracy and have a provincial mindset. More than geography they are the reason that the company is not growing.
Empower employees who show initiative rather than sideline them.
Next 5 years are looking very dim for the company unless it rapidly innovates and looses the managers who are the biggest barrier to progress.
