I worked at Room & Board full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Non-commisson environment
    3 weeks paid vacation
    Beautiful workplace
Most Design Associates are great people

    Cons

Management is horrible, as well as Central Partners. Most have no qualifications for what they are doing. Ex: Just because you've been with the company as a sales associate for 15 years, doesn't mean you have any HR experience. Discount is a joke. Company does not hire management from within. Raises are non existent-get your money upfront. Company is decades behind in technology. Management would rather lie to save their own jobs than support their team-which is pointless since the turn over for management is constant. I'm sure this is not what John Gabbert had in mind when he started this company. Communication within company is horrible and many things are done last minute which in turn gives a bad customer experience. Company falsified documents in order to wrongfully terminate multiple employees. Management would "write up employees" with "excessive absences" for seriously injuries (Ex: car accidents, hospitalization). Management is loose lipped with personal information about other employees. Guiding Principles (employee handbook) is not carried out by managemnet or Central partners.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade technology in all store and on website
Take advice from Design Associates and apply it.
Central Office should listen to merchandising/branding advice from NY/CA stores-no one looks to MN for anything innovative.
Reward your employees with a better discount (maybe one free piece of furniture a year) if you are unable to give raises.
Leadership should spend more time working with your team instead of hanging out in the back offices.
Leadership should involve team members in other areas of the business, instead of trying to handle everything themselves. A good leader is able to teach and help their team excel.
Central Office and Leadership should be proactive instead of reactive and keep true to their promises to their employees.
Accessory buyers, product development team, and merchandising leads should be based in costal areas-NY/LA. MN is not the hub of what is innovative, contemporary, or stylish.
Note to Mr. John Gabbert-The Guiding Principles are amazing, however most of your leadership/HR team doesn't follow through with them.
