Fun, small, intimate atmosphere. Everyone cares & we're building something very cool. It's fun to care so much about building great product.

Competitive industry. Can make it a bit nervy.

I understand that we're a start up, but we should start thinking about career development for folks.

    I worked at Roost.com full-time

    Pros

    The team is fun, and the atmosphere is friendly and laid back. Most there are very authentic people, that really do care about each other.

    Cons

    "Family" is far too heavily focused on. The product seems to come second to that.

    You really have to fight to get even near competitive wages. Initially, you will be offered a salary that could quite easily be seen as a joke, with some percentage of equity, which "means family." No regard seems to be given to the fact that money feeds the kids, not equity.

    It really doesn't matter if you're passionate about seeing the company succeed. If you don't fit into the clique, you won't survive. In fact, it seems like those who care about the company succeeding have less of a chance of staying on the team.

    No regard is given to standards or protocols. Any attempts to create them will be seen as a challenge or threat.

    Security and control is taken far too seriously by engineering, to the point that it heavily hinders others' ability to succeed. Attempts to change that are seen as a threat.

    You won't be taken seriously unless you fit into the clique.

    Advice to Management

    Wake up from the delusion. You're alienating people who truly care about the business, all in the name of "family," even if some of your family doesn't care as much.

    First and foremost to having a tight cliquey team is having a successful business, which is second to having a team that cares about the business succeeding. Without the business, you don't get the team.

    LISTEN TO YOUR TEAM. ALL OF THEM. Not just the people who fit into your clique. If someone is telling you something that may help improve the business, take them seriously, even if the end result may mean reprimanding you like. Sure, it could be a threat to your tight clique, but it isn't a threat to the business. You hire people to help the business succeed, not to take you down. Get over the mistrust.

    I worked at Roost.com (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Young, fun group. Lot of excitement and commitment to growth. New office space. Moves quickly from idea to idea (see cons).

    Cons

    Attention contractors: Payment not guaranteed! Creating good tech & allocating the time to do so is not a top priority. Two thirds of current founders are not tech-oriented. Decisions are not usually based on or supported by data, as is sometimes the case in early start-ups that are (too) fast-moving. Compensation is below market. Tech team is mostly remote/out-sourced.

    Advice to Management

    Admit to not knowing. No one is expecting infallibility, so don't shut down ideas or concerns (based on experience) as if you are. Also, you're a tech company---value your tech.
