I worked at Ross Stores full-time

    Pros

Discount was good, getting to see the new merchandise as it rolled off the truck was exciting, store managers get a company paid trip once per year for meetings but most of the meetings were a joke.

    Cons

Constantly being badgered about program execution and being told to call other stores to see what they do to be successful, so you do and they flat out tell you they're not even running the programs. Your DM never has a nice thing to say about your store and will pick and pick until he can find something wrong and then unravel it into a lack of MOD execution. Not very good raises unless you're a part of the "good ole boy system" Ross still uses. Your authority as a manager is compromised by corporate because as soon as you have an associate or member of management call in on you, your DM will step in and take the situation over no matter how right you are for performance managing the person. The only way you can terminate an associate is for stealing, they all know it, and the all use that knowledge to do whatever they want. The associates end up running that store, not the management. Ross has the highest turnover rate of ANY company I've ever worked for before.

    Advice to Management

Let your store managers run the store.

I have been working at Ross Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    decent advancement possibilities
good on paper the policies and manuals sound great
non-store mgt seem fair and evenhanded
the store will hire almost anyone

    Cons

    low pay no hours
non-store mgt wont respond to concerns of employees in the stores
bias is rampant in the stores
    very low morale
not enough payroll to make the stores effective
you are expected to be available all day everyday, so you cant have a life

    Advice to Management

talk below store mgr without them around; find out about the low morale
you get what you pay for; minimal wages get you a minimal effort
