I have been working at Rural/Metro full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

Nationwide transfer opportunities
Paid Vacation
Paid Sick Time* (see cons)
Free Ambulance Rides
The policies change so often you never get bored.

Cons

The chain of command is filled with blurred lines and its members are periodically fired and replaced right before the holiday season.
It's entirely too common to receive several amended policies per week regarding a system that has already been in place for years.
All employees are expendable, and the culture of the company makes this very clear.

Regarding paid sick time: Employees are allowed to call out four times per year. At the fifth call out, the employee is placed on corrective action and is immediately fired at the eighth call out.

Advice to Management

Fix and shrink the chain of command so that everyone knows what they do or do not have control over, to alleviate the rampant, drastic policy changes. Work on fostering a culture that is less fear-based and more comfortable in order to maximize productivity and reduce turnover.

    Pros

EMS is a family and a corporation can't take that away, though they try.

    Cons

Terrible benefits, low wages, poor management, awful business practices.

    Advice to Management

When you see someone making $10 an hour shock the live back into a child whose heart stopped, maybe then you'll wake up and see how selfless your employees are and how selfish you are. Shame on you, and shame on your poor decisions.

I have been working at Rural/Metro full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great stepping stone into a fire department or ambulance company

    Cons

Corporate culture lacks engagement with field crews. Lots of drama and politics for sub-par pay and crappy working environment, welcome to private EMS.
