I have been working at Rutgers University full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Outstanding benefits, vibrant location, diverse campus community, wide variety of cultural and academic offerings, solid support from administration, friendly and helpful staff

    Cons

The university is a large place to navigate causing some run around when you're trying to complete tasks, often the layers of bureaucracy get in the way of efficiently getting work done

    Advice to Management

There is a general sense of cynicism at the university which permeates through faculty, staff, and students. Sometimes it seems like everyone is competing for resources.

"A gigantic bureaucracy that works (barely) in spite of itself"

I have been working at Rutgers University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Intellectual freedom, generally nice people. A real community of learning, instruction, and research. Most students are reasonably high quality. Many excellent programs. AAUP (professor's union) protects our jobs and intellectual freedom.

    Cons

Mind-numbing complexity, RUScrew, still clinging to in-person instruction. Chronic staffing problems in the ORSP and DGCA offices hamper ability to obtain and manage grant funding. As at any large university, money talks, and if you aren't bringing in enough grant funding, you cannot get anyone to listen to your ideas or get promoted. As the flip side to the AAUP, the staffing unions have rigid word rules and make it difficult to hire qualified people and fire those who are underperforming.

    Advice to Management

Innovate faster or we will be toast. Rutgers has gotten much better in the last 10 years, but other big universities have gotten better, faster. As a result, RU is slipping in the rankings.
