I have been working at SAS Institute full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Government like employee retention policy, no one gets fired or leaves.
Great culture for such a large company
    Great Healthcare
    Beautiful Campus.

    Cons

Hiring family within the same work group is "not allowed" but the policy isn't enforced. How a company this large doesn't see that is a problem is beyond me.
DMV like retention policy, no one gets fired or leaves so ideas and promotions are very stagnant.
IT managers have a "but we have always done it this way" mentality.
    Oppressive turfism is some areas
    Intertwined areas of responsibility
Very few employees work at the SAS described in Fortune, the rest are just a number.
Company culture breeds complacency and people who desire to move up and have responsibility are held down so the people around them can "work just hard enough not to get fired."
I feel like I'm on the set of Office Space everyday.
Promotions or transfers rely on the good ole'boy program.
    Pay is industry low

    Advice to Management

Senior Management seems to have a grasp on things but the folks between them and the common person are living in a make believe land. This is generally the case with all companies though.

Look around and separate yourself from "Yes Men". Hire people from outside the company and stop using the good ole' boy program.

I have been working at SAS Institute full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Smart people; laid-back, academic atmosphere. Lots of great perks like a full gym, olympic pool, health and fitness programs, inexpensive great food in the cafeterias, m&m's (and lots of other free food) in the break rooms. Individual offices - cubes are only used for interns and in space emergencies (which are rare).

    Cons

There is somewhat of an entitlement attitude among many employees which makes it frustrating if you're actually trying to get work done. There are a lot of political games at the division head level that are annoying to those in the trenches.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to manage out poor performers. I have seen many people hang on for years or even decades that we'd be better off without.
