I worked at SPAR Group full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

SPAR is a great starter position because you learn so much. You are constantly interacting with clients some work is ongoing and other work has a firm deadline. If your lucky to get both types of programs you gain a wealth of knowledge about merchandising, managing others, working with field teams, technical writing, deadlines, and about yourself. How dedicated/creative you are as an employee becomes clear to yourself. Since each program is vastly different you are constantly being challenged. If you do get stuck on 1 account your days are extremely monotonous and each weekday becomes a repeat of the previous week hoping for a different end result.

Cons

SPAR is a sink or swim environment with no work/life balance! There is very little training so you have to jump right on into your program. You are definitely overworked and underpaid without acceptable bonuses or raises. SPAR never says "no" to their clients so if its 7 days a week 24 hours a day requested from the client you better believe it will happen. For you that sucks because your manager (one of the directors of client services) is NOT going to do this and the burden will fall on you. Holidays the offices are suppose to be closed, but again if a client requests for you to work you will work from home without additional pay. HR has little to no authority when it comes to employee complaints of unfair practices with their manager. You have to talk to your manager to resolve the issue you have with him/her and let's face it will go no where.

Advice to Management

VPs need to realize that some of the Directors of Client Service need to be fired! They are dated when it comes to new ideas and continue to try use their old strategies. Also since there is truly no way to report Directors to HR anonymously, VPs need to take time to have a review with Account Managers to understand who really is the "brains" behind the program execution. Too many situations occur that Directors get commended on a job well done when they didn't do anything. It is the Account Managers working the long hours, on the phone with DMs, answering merchandiser questions to complete the client objectives on time.

    They don't pay the best, but the more you work the more money you can make.
