Doesn't Recommend

Pros

- Every other Fridays off
- Good pay and benefits
- Nice people to work with

Cons

- If you stay here for more than 2-3 years, you will become useless. (Get out while you still can)
- Lack of a good mentoring system for engineers
- All managers do here are traveling and looking for funding
- Constant changes to their pay-for-performance system
- Not enough technical work for engineers at the center
- Rigid management structure
- Useless training classes for engineers

Advice to Management

More technical work, don't try to force everyone to be a project manager.

    Recommends

    Pros

Very smart and talented people work here. There are a lot of really cool projects to work on. You can find your own projects if you get the funding for them. Good pay.

    Cons

Projects can be cut short due to loss of funding. There are a lot of restrictions on unclassified projects, which can be a headache sometimes.

    Advice to Management

I didn't work much with the management, but do know that it can be difficult to work with from an engineering perspective. I would recommend getting more training in the technical field helps.

Current Employee - Project Engineer in Charleston, SC
Current Employee - Project Engineer in Charleston, SC

    Pros

Work schedules are generally flexible. Many of the managers do not micromanage your workload, though some do. Employees have many opportunities to move around the organization if they are not happy where they are.

    Cons

Career advancement and promotions are largely based on how long you've been with the organization versus how capable you are to perform the job.

    Advice to Management

Make pay for performance the reality and not just a slogan. Give pay raises to people who take the time to advance their education while working at SPAWAR.
