"Had a great time!"

I worked at SUNY Albany part-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Great people, decent salary, good benefits. The people, in general, are very nice, and there is ALWAYS room to move up the hierarchy.

Cons

At my specific job, some of the clients were really...dumb. Sorry to put it this way, but that's the case. And I guess it's not specifically this employer, but all over the world! Maybe it's the sort of person I am, but it's not stupidity that pisses me off, but the ability to acknowledge that your stupid, and still not doing anything about it. Oh well.

Advice to Management

Make sure people don't take advantage of you! Some of the other employees were getting paid while not performing, or at least severely underperforming. This should NOT be allowed at a world-class research institution.

I have been working at SUNY Albany full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are generally great all-around. The campus itself is quite nice as is the academic atmosphere. Can't beat the location. You will have your position until retirement if you choose to stay in it. Really great for those who just need a 9-5, stable job so you can raise a family or have a life outside work. Some of the professors are the most interesting folks you will likely ever meet.

    Cons

Get used to the idea of "do more with less". Never expect to be rewarded for anything. All positions on campus are essentially dead-end. Don't expect pay raises or promotions. The higher ups in the chain don't care about you or what you do, and you will be lucky if your direct management does. No one really seems to care on campus and those that do are just put down. For as many hard-working employees, there's 2-3x the amount of lackluster employees. Management is filled with lots of egotism. There's a LOT of negativity on-campus from employees, try to work around it or ignore it. The Union does protect those negative and lackluster employees which is shame to those who work hard and strive for more.

    Advice to Management

Fix your salaries of your workers so they are in-line with other State positions. You expect too much from those who are simply overworked and underpaid. It'd be nice to be rewarded once in a while and not to have to fear asking for a salary adjustment. Start caring about your employees, and don't allow middle management to be as fear-mongering and tyrannical. Sure they might be a buffer to the "real-world" of employees, but there is no reason why they can't be caring and a person to go to for assistance. Most management on-campus should be ashamed of themselves.
