I worked at SUPERVALU full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

In marketing they had a flexible work environment where you can work from home, which I loved.

Cons

They have no real grasp of how to compete in the grocery business in this century. Until they start making serious changes to their business model they will not be able to compete. Merchandising runs the ship and until their focus on vendors instead of consumers changes, they cannot expect to change their trajectory.

Advice to Management

Change everything you're doing right now. Seriously, everything.

    Pros

Work/life balance. Generally able to know when you will be busy. Its a good place if you like consistent work and don't mind staying in the same position.

    Cons

Not a lot a growth potential, salaries are not keeping up with market rates

    Advice to Management

Even though the company is struggling you still need to pay attention to employee morale and keeping good people. Look into non-monetary ways to reward and compensate your employees if bonuses aren't possible. You can't turn around a struggling company with less than stellar employees to back it up.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at SUPERVALU full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Still a solid company in many ways, Supervalu is particulary solid at the wholesale side of the business. Most of the managers are fair minded, with many solid divisions within the company.

    Cons

There is an excessive focus on cost cutting and not enough focus on sales growth. There also seems to be a divided between senior management and the rank and file with most of the rank and file employees feeling like they cannot make a difference.

    Advice to Management

Senior management should take action to ensure all employees are engaged in the company's mission. This could mean reinstating the employee private brand discount to its full amount or the CEO donating part of his salary to an "exceptional employee" fund or some similar feel good action.
