I have been working at Safeway full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

There is a nice gym for employees and their spouses.

Cons

I have never been in a company that had so many layers of VP's. It is beyond ridiculous. For a company that is embedded in the Bay Area, their management style is so un-dynamic and so un-progressive. The "old" mentality of "do as I say, not as I do" is alive and well here. They don't retain talent here because they harbor a sense of mediocrity. It's unfortunate, because I actually enjoy shopping at Safeway, it's just the management level that is failing deeply.

Advice to Management

Cut some of the overhead and reduce the levels of VP's. Business is tough, but offer some perks to employees that don't cost anything. Jeans every Friday (not just because you donate to a charity that is being pushed on you). It's 2012, it's ok if some "salaried" employees work from home on occasion (and that does not mean every Friday, but when it is reasonable). You could really turn this company around, but you need to look in the mirror and be able to say, "we need to change".

I worked at Safeway part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Training is easy to understand and follow.
Flexible hours for a high school student.
The managers weren't afraid to get dirty and do the job with you if needed (collecting carts etc.)/they didn't ask you do something they couldn't do.

    Cons

Lot of politics going on within the employees/managers.
    Hard to get more hours.
Wasn't trained when I turned 18 and could use the equipment.

    Advice to Management

The management needs to be more in sync with each other, with them being at odds/off it definitely escalated the social politics that were going on.
