I have been working at Safeway full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great company when owned and operated by Dimatteo family then Safeway bought it and have done a wonderful job of running it into the ground.

    Cons

Safeway's "My way or the highway approach/one size fits all'" Does not to this day understand the Chicago market and its diverse clietele. Company functions in an atmosphere of fear, negative reinforcement, and micromanagement. George Orwell's "1984" is a perfect analogy to how this company works. The "Peter Principal" is alive and well here. Watch your back..."They smile in your face all the while they want you replaced...the BACKSTABBERS" Cameras,Cameras,Cameras

    Advice to Management

DOMINICKS was sucessful because they catered to the unique, dynamic and diverse customer base they enjoyed. They have a condescending approach to both their customers and employees. Their "world class service"program is a sham. The store managers only care about shop scores because that is the "Holy Grail" for bonuses. The store can fall apart and do no business, but God forbid those scores are bad. The experienced employees DO NOT MOVE UP BECAUSE THEY GET MOVED OUT!!! Try going into your stores after 7pm and see no help, quit making a few select stores look nice for Steve Burd while the rest of the stores disintegrate.

    Pros

great cafeteria foods, product samples from vendors, gym

    Cons

horrible culture, militaristic regime, no growth opportunities (unless you're in category management)

    Advice to Management

Can you treat people like human-beings, not slaves you whip with your leather belts?
