I have been working at Safeway part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Union representation and contract spell out exactly how you are paid and benefits available. The rep will fight for you if you need them to. You can expect a raise at specific intervals. If you are on the friendly side of management you can get ahead. When you have a good manager the place is wonderful to work for.

    Cons

You HAVE to be on friendly side of management to get past the hourly jobs. Management tries to find ways around the contract all the time. Sometimes your hours are cut to the bare minimum yet you are expected to come in at the drop of a hat because management didn't do their job by properly scheduling staff. The overall working environment is hostile, with rumors, cliques, egos and mean girl tactics running rampant at certain stores.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to fight the contract terms you have in place with the Unions. By doing this all the time it appears you really don't care about your employees, no matter how often you ask how they are doing today. Stop loading up the back end of your stores with overpaid under-trained pencil pushers. Sometimes the details need more attention, but not the ones management seems to think needs addressing. Clean bathrooms are more important than a backroom with painted floor mouldings.

    Pros

It was a job until you found a more practical position, Good benefits.

    Cons

Upper management had know clue what it was like to manage at store level.
Constant audits wasted productive time for needed accomplishments..
District Manager had know personality and it was all about politics with the managers who had worked there longer. Training was horrible.

    Advice to Management

Management, get a personality and true leadership skills.
