I worked at Safeway full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

They promote from within; you can rise as far as you are willing to go. Corporate pay is good and you meet a lot of nice people. When they closed the division they provided transitional support.

Cons

There is not formal training; they taught you as you went so there were no classes to help transfer to another company.

Advice to Management

Treat your people the way would would like to be treated.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, strong union, nearly impossible to get fired

    Cons

Your superiors will do anything to make some extra coin, including stalling your promotion for MONTHS at a time while you are filling the role of the promotion, taking money from your department bonus to buy new things for the store, making you do extra work outside of your job description so they don't have to use as many man hours, stealing hours from your department and using them elsewhere. No sick leave, if you get sick you don't get paid, which means that everyone still comes to work when they are sick and tries to hide it, thusly getting EVERYONE ELSE sick including customers.

    Advice to Management

Spend less money on procedures that don't work, like safety observations. My best advice is that when your employees are happy, your customers are happy, and when your customers are happy, you make more money. Make your employees happier. Nearly every one of my coworkers hates this company as a whole.

I worked at Safeway part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The managers were very understanding with schedules and would work with you.
The atmosphere was very friendly and most employees got along well.
The pay was good considered to other stores in the area.
They would give out raises every 6 months.

    Cons

There are a lot of procedures to follow when serving customers.
On slow months hours are cut so you may not get the hours you want.
Donations, Donations, Donations! You have to ask every customer for donations and sometimes donations would last up to a month. We would always get repeat customers so there was always some customer angry at getting asked to donate.
