I worked at Salvation Army full-time (More than a year)

Pros

Great mission, great people, great flexibility

Cons

Lots of bureaucracy which slows the pace of business and is quite costly.

Advice to Management

Streamline the bureaucracy for efficiency's sake. Be willing to adapt to modern business practices rather than clinging to old tradition.

I worked at Salvation Army full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Some of the people are great to work with. The ability to openly pray and worship is great. Incredible vacation and sick package. The corps do great work.

    Cons

Upper management is all related. There is one department where the director oversees her sister and brother-in-law. They create jobs for family at high rates of pay.

    Advice to Management

Gut the headquarters. You have officers and directors spending obscene amounts on frivolously things. Cars, new carpet of officer housing, expensive lunches with each other, $25,000 decorating allowances??? Come on-- people are in need. And while you are at it get a real HR department that can stand up to the nepotism. You can't fight for a job when you are going against an entire family!

I worked at Salvation Army part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked with a few friends and met some good co-workers while i was there.

    Cons

Critical thinking was looked down upon, working to solve a costumers problem was less important than getting more inventory onto the floor.
