I worked at San Francisco State part-time (More than a year)

Pros

In the computer science department there were many decent professors, sometimes with industry experience. Standards were generally high with a focus on software engineering. If you passed the upper division software classes this is a pretty good indication that you are ready for industry. My experience as a (paid) teaching assistant for the computer science department ($10/hr) was hardly worth it financially did at least give me some insight and experience and connections that proved very valuable in the long run.

Cons

Budget issues cause problems with obtaining necessary resources or offering as full a range of classes as would be ideal. Other departments outside of Computer Science and Engineering suffer from a range of issues, including quality and lack of ability to offer students individual attention. Rising tuition mean that San Francisco State is becoming less of a good deal as time goes on.

I have been working at San Francisco State full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

stable job with good pension plan

    Cons

No career advancement opportunities. People who are assigned as your supervisor might not know anything. They become your boss simply because they stay in the system longer and has more seniority.

    Advice to Management

The whole eco-system is a big mess. It is very political and sort of dysfunctional. People really want to have more transparency for the upper-management decision making processes, and more incentives to work harder. Most staffs and faculty have not had any salary raise for the past 5-7 years.
