I have been working at San Mateo County full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers for the most part.
    Work life balance is great
The pay is decent, but slight could be better considering our cost of living.
Benefits are decent but is a far strecth from the old plans that was offer prior to 2013.

Like everywhere else, politics get in the way and bad upper management ruins things from the top down. Most superviosers are great. I'm talking about the very top. However, the department as a whole (most) are really passionate and work hard everyday to make things run smoothly. Mostly everyone is willing to help and communicates well to complete even the most complex situations/task.

    Cons

Some lazy workers that ruin it for the other staff. Upper management could care less about your work load and establishes impossible deadlines, yet the resources/technology they provide seems like they are still stuck in the 90s. It's a vicious cycle.feedback gets taken in but nothing really gets done until something hits the fan.
The money generated from our department goes into a black hole. There is no transparency as to what is done with it or where its going. When a program ask for funding, the budget is set so low that it's almost like a slap to face. This is clearly a upper management issue. Ironically, we are the ones bringing in the money but does not knows what happens with it. Try explaining that to the public.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to listen to staff and provide more help or proper resources if they want certain thing done. Overworking staff until they quit, then hiring is not a way to manage. It take away time and effort to retrain and learn everything to an adequate level of competency. It takes months! Feedback has been asked and given back but nothing really gets done in terms of the number of bodies needed to keep the ball rolling. Hence, that is why everyone is so backed up. We try but people who like to sip on their morning coffee in office can really care less. Well, some of them.
