I worked at Scholastic full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

What's not to like about a company that's main mission is to get books to kids. Great place for working moms. Good work/life balance

Cons

Outside of the blockbuster hits like Hunger Games and Harry Potter, the rest of the business model seems to be floundering and they are still feeling their way in the ecommerce space. It's hard to get excited when you are cutting back your budgets every other year.

I worked at Scholastic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Loved the family friendly atmosphere. Was able to have a great work/life balance. Super professional people, NICE people fulfilling a mission.

    Cons

May layoffs EVERY year. Was hired even though my Manager knew my tenure would probably not be more than two years. :-( The other divisions of Scholastic are bringing down the proverbial ship and thus Scholastic Book Fairs was forced to do really deep layoffs over the last several years. (Publicly traded company)

    Advice to Management

Management was great in Orlando, unfortunately the layoff orders were coming from higher up in NYC.

I have been working at Scholastic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Scholastic is a lovely place to work. Some plusses:

    -Nice, respectful people.
-Great office location in SoHo NYC!
-Good cheap food in the cafeteria (it's also nice to sit up there)
-Flexible work options (you can work from home whenever you want)
-VERY casual (I wear t-shirt and jeans every day)
-No set "hours" - most people roll into the office around 930 or 10.
-Benefits are very good (we even have PET INSURANCE!!!)
    -Global reputation.

    Cons

Highly bureaucratic. Many decisions come from upper management (and no, of course they don't know how to do your job!)

Even though I'm a full-time employee I was still given an end-date in my contract.

Ineffective management. Inappropriate time given to projects.

LOTS of work. Expect to take work home over the weekends during crunch times.

Many pointless meetings that eat away at your day and lower productivity.

Low pay (but, after all, this is publishing!)

    Advice to Management

    Listen to your employees.
