I have been working at Scholastic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

If you have a family, work-at-home is lenient and maternity leave is wonderful. People generally get in at 9:00 and leave at 5. Amazing benefits and friendly, young employees.

    Cons

Some business units are doing mass layoffs, employees aren't encouraged to switch departments or move up with their talents, lots of overuse of freelancers and temps, backbiting, and understaffing.

    Advice to Management

Encourage growth or people will leave.

I worked at Scholastic as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Really friendly team, attentive manager, super cool location in SoHo, interesting work.

    Cons

People kept to themselves, not much opportunity for advancement (though this is probably characteristic of most publishing firms).

    Advice to Management

Engage younger staff -- as a childrens' book publisher, they're an important perspective.
