I have been working at Securian Financial full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Promote from within. Never had layoffs in IT. Very safe.

Cons

Very, very safe; risk averse to the point of being stodgy

Advice to Management

Some projects are done to avoid upsetting middle management that "owns" a technology, even when everyone else knows there are better ways (HP Service Management ring bells?). Don't be afraid to make a change when things don't work.

I have been working at Securian Financial full-time

    Pros

    Fairly stable.
No need to go above and beyond because the company feels you are only valuable in the forty to forty five hours you sit at your desk.

    Cons

    Lower than industry pay.
The company 401k contribution and the yearly bonus are the same thing, so it is not as much a bonus as it is just a company retirement contribution.
To thrive in management, you must assimilate down to the most petty detail.
The company is afraid of failure and punishes risk takers when they do not succeed. This pretty much kills innovative approaches to do things.
Very concerned about little things that do not matter, like the text of your internal email signature or the way an IT person dresses.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to take risks.
Stop with the charades and have an open and innovative workplace. Worrying about the petty things and punishing the risk takers will only serve to chase away the future leaders that could have brought much success to your company.

I worked at Securian Financial full-time

    Pros

The company is pretty good to its employees and overall has done fairly well--results-wise. The individual division is struggling with recruiting and retention of advisors but the retirement area is doing well. Decent offices, decent work...decent pay.

    Cons

Hard to get change to happen. They want you to drink their kool-aid. Many people have long tenures, but this makes it difficult to get change through. Lots of long term folks are just sticking it out for their pension.
