Pros

Great small company environment with a lovely view, good benefits, and talented individuals. Remote working is also available for those who occasionally have to pick up/drop off the kids.

Cons

Requirements gathering is difficult given the nature of the customer (government, security clearances required). This funnels down to frustrations in software development.

Advice to Management

Figure out a direction for the product in a way that's best for the company, not just chase after what the customer wants.

I worked at Semantic Research full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Interesting problem space; lots to learn and figure out.
Lovely location by the water in Pt. Loma.
Good benefits (for a small company).

    Cons

They lost their focus when they went running after investment capital and haven't gotten it back.
They no longer value individual employees.
Management is top-heavy and doesn't know how to run a software development company.
They have lost a *lot* of good people recently (2015-2016).

    Advice to Management

Clean house at the top, fix the ratio of CxO's to developers.
Remember that it's your employees that do the work and get things done ... show that you value them.
Stop focusing on investment and get back to the basics: focus on the unique core competency of the technology, clearly define the product and opportunities, establish achievable goals.
