I have been working at Serco, Inc. as a contractor (More than a year)

Pros

Serco provides government and commercial clients with top notch professional services. The portions I have had the opportunity to work with legitimately want to provide their customers with the best of business class solutions. They (we) work very hard to make sure the customer is getting what they are paying for but always try to go one step better and become a real partner in the endeavor, not be "Gold Plating" but by having frank and direct discussions about what the scope is and what has to be done from the clients POV if they want to change or add scope.

Cons

The company is large enough that there is often an issue with one hand not knowing what the other is doing. We are "building" capabilities and often this means searching for Past Performance outside of your own Business Unit, but the databases aren't set up for that yet. Its a work in progress.

Advice to Management

Expand into commercial sectors faster and aggressively. This Government trend towards Technically acceptable Lowest Price contracting is going to continue for a number of years.

I worked at Serco, Inc. full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Co-workers come from a wide range of countries and are really nice (the pawns of the company.)

    Cons

Everyone has a chip on their shoulder. Were told that the more we screw-up, the more repercussions. No constructive criticism. Everyone does a excellent job there, but don't get commended as they should. There are no raises, no bonuses(for a number of years) Vacation has been halved. 401k is enforced. Those that have very little money to afford the cost of living is automatically thrown into 401k. Employees are very disgruntled. Management pays 70% less on benefits while employees fork over 6x the average cost of benefits. A little unfair eh? Were told to work harder and faster, but not merited in our efforts.
If you are multi-lingual, look forward to doing double the work. Quotas for phone calls is disgraceful, you wonder why customers who call in are dissatisfied with the service. Its all about numbers, the person is not important. The more money they make is all that matters in their bottomline.

    Advice to Management

Management is a separate entity. Communication is zero. Outside visitors are kept in the dark. If an employee is approached by a higher-up or visitor, voicing your concern is a risk you take, otherwise get your tongue cut off. Information is hidden and kept secret even though its a team effort. Last i heard employees are to be valued. Their the foundation of the company.
