I have been working at Service Corporation International full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

This is a career where you are assisting people in a time of great need and it can be rewarding.

Cons

Compensation for serving families is only minimum wage and that is taken out of any commission you make. Commission levels on sales are very difficult to reach in certain markets this stress causes counselors to turn against each other. You are expected to pressure people when they are grieving. Working 50-60 hours a week is not unusual also weekends and holidays.

Advice to Management

Pay a fair base pay so your employee turnover is not so great. It takes a year to get a solid grip on this work and develop a referral base, most new employees can not hang on that long making minimum wage. Raise the commission or at least stop taking the hourly wage out of it and create a clear pay structure... no one I know understands how they are paid. Family Service counselors are overloaded with administration work, stop cutting back on admin positions so counselors can properly serve and follow up with families. The revolving door of employees is not good for the company or families. Show more appreciation for the caring and hardworking people you have who are making this company so successful. You might want to take a look at the way COSTCO fairly pays employees and still makes a huge profit.
