I have been working at Shelby County Government full-time (More than 8 years)

Pros

The leave time and benefits are a much added value to my position.

Cons

There are too many people running our program without the best interests at heart. The people in charge are not competent and don't treat us as individuals.

Advice to Management

Let employees be innovative and creative and learn to communicate! Try being honest!

    Hrs good, 8:00 am -4 :30 pm, work was easy.

    Cons

    No challenge to work, co workers were hard to deal with. Mgmt allowed too much bs!!

    Advice to Management

    Make it an equal opportunity employer!!! Not so prejudicial!!

    Pros

    Stable employment during rough economic times

    Cons

    Makes you complacent, you can forget valuable skills, ability, and knowledge useful to the private sector if ever looking for a non-public job. Hard for the private sector to understand how government functionality can relate to their job offers. Low pay and too much politics.

    Advice to Management

    Management should take more responsibility for the department(s) and stop making job issues the employee problem. Disagreements among the hierarchy often become an unpleasant issue for the employees. Promotions are often bequeathed to an internal employee and not based on experience according to how they favor one employee over the other. Going forward there should be no favoritism in choosing a current employee for a position.
