    Pros

good if you are senior officer

    Cons

double standards for crew. senior officers, junior officers and on the end crew all together on the same ship but with different basic human rights. Different salaries for the same job according color of skin and nationality. Management level of the senior officers on the ship have practice of hiding and covering up accidents and near-misses to get annual bonus. If you had accident on the ship company will not pay yours medical treatment after you signed off.

    Advice to Management

No advice, Management getting annual bonus based on ships safety performance.

I worked at Shell full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Shell is world leading oil and gas companies with about 90K staff and significant presence of contractors. The company pay good salaries for their staff with very good benefits and yearly bonus. The company also provides good office facilities that include clinic, sport center, gym, canteen etc. You will be also have flexible working hours and have an option to work from home but many abuse it. You also can attend training and get certification without been bonded by the company.

The workload for this company is less compare to other companies that I have work before and the expectation is not that high so you are not very stressful. The company also very concern about health, security and safety environment (HSSE) and you will be grateful to be working in this environment.

The top executive management appeared to be very competence individual that lead by example. They have great vision and able to steer the company to achieve their goal objectively.

    Cons

You will be surprised that the line managers will have unlimited power (veto) against their staff. They basically have full control of the fate of individual while working in the company in term of career progression and performance review. The single line manager (only an individual that your report to) will have absolute power to decide how much bonus you will get, decide if you got any promotion or not. Basically, he/she can control your whole career progression in Shell. Due to this authority given, some line managers abuse it and becomes the little Napoleon in the company and they basically can do whatever they want and please do not expect that HR will be on your side if you complaint about it.

Many staff in Shell got promoted based on favoritism rather than pure merit. Most of the staff who are less competence but know how to play office politics and be in the right crowd get promoted faster based on corridor talk.. This staff also normally cleverly able to make themselves visible by been outspoken and keep highlighting their simple milestone and sometimes useless achievement as great as Mount Everest. Unfortunately, most of the time, they are academically and technically handicapped with poor time and goal management but very good at manipulating facts and figures.

You will be surprised on how the promotion process and career progression works in Shell. You can be doing something of low impact and of no value in other companies but you can easily get good performance review and promotion. The most important things to do is you just need to have good relationship with your line manager, play office politics and about be really outspoken about your little achievement plus stepping on other people's head.

Highly competence staff with have good personality and leadership quality normally is left in the dark. This is simply because they rarely talk arrogantly to announce their excellent achievement and all the great milestones they have achieve for the company. They are rather the quiet person that do the real work in Shell. I have see many worst case scenario happened to these staff when their line manager takes the full credit of these smart and hard working individuals without sharing the glory with them because the line manager are selfish and care only about their career and afraid that more competence staff to take the spotlight.

Many highly competence staff with excellent management skill left the company out of frustration. This lead he company with many staff that are only outspoken, poor time and goal management but sound really good in-front of higher management. They will continue to manipulate facts and figure to climb up the corporate leader as fast as they came while "killing' the good one.

    Advice to Management

The top executive management should look into the issue of the line managers becoming the little Napoleon and abusing their power in the company. They are the delivery arm for the goal and objective they are outlined by the company. Unfortunately, some of these line managers that are actually killing and delaying the achievement of the goal by driving away the good and more competence staff because they want to continue to be on the spotlight. These incompetence line managers are normally anxious that more competence staff will be steal their spotlight especially those that are not outspoken but deliver great result on time. The line manager will systematically ensure that the people they don’t like are not noticeable and left the company.

It is important to ensure that line manager does not practice favoritism. To ensure this, create a new process that enable their sub-ordinates are also able to anonymously rate the competency level of their line manager. The performance review also should be done by peer of the same department/team to ensure that line manager does not have full veto power and rate poorly to staff they don’t like. This will provide more transparency to the whole process of evaluating staff’s performance.
