I have been working at Sherwin-Williams part-time (More than a year)

Pros

Having worked for the company as a sales associate for over a year now, while going to school, the managers were very flexible with my schedule and allowed me to learn and grow more and more each day. I have finally made a decision to stay with the company and hope for many future oppurtunites.

Cons

As a female working for the company, with not alot of muscle strength one downside is all the lifting and carrying you have to do on a daily basis.

    Pros

    The culture is fantastic. All of my coworkers (excluding 1 bad apple) are extremely friendly people who will work with you to get what needs to be done.

    Cons

    The resources needed (mainly labor) to have a successful retail store was not there.

    Advice to Management

    Two people running a $1.8 million dollar store is not a good idea.

    I worked at Sherwin-Williams full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    It is really not rocket science! Sell paint, mix paint, deliver paint, clean, answer phone calls.

    Cons

    There is absolutely no room for growth. If you do not have a degree (for mixing paint) it could take you 10+ years to even become an Assistant Manager. Something they do not tell you when you interview is that they have MTPs which are college graduates that will be trained for a period of 6 months and then will be assigned to an Assistant Manager position (Even if they still do not know what they are doing) I guess you could call it:" tax break for the company." There is absolutely no interview process when there are MTPs in the district, automatically they will get the job. Even if your have been there 5+ years. It is a "day in and day out battle" of pricing and how you have to sell more and never ever will you get a thank you from upper management. There was a time that it was the Store Manager running the store, now I do not even know why they still have managers. It is so bad, to the point that it is worth to be a manager than to be a regular full-time employee. Also they are always raising prices making it a nightmare, e.g. you will have a long time loyal customer of the store not SW the store (just to be clear) come in and their prices have gone up, it takes the Sales Rep a minimum of two weeks to "fix it". So when they "fix it" you go to process a sale and see that the prices have not change. Remember these are busy contractors that do not have time on a monday morning to be dealing with this kind of stupidity. And you as an employee are all alone. Last but not least, training? BIG LOL. There is NONE. They will make you watch a video here and there or have the Store Manager try to train you but at the end of the day they do not have a clue, so what do they tell you? On your own time go and find the answer yourself. Oh! I forgot to mention, the pay... I'll put it this way, if you think 25 years of service in a company and you still making 50k + bonuses is enough for you, then go ahead and give it a try. LOL "bonuses" good luck with that.

    Advice to Management

    Hey super man if Lowe's or Home Depot are selling hammers is because they also sell wood and nails.lol Stop putting people in charge that all they do is make a lot of noise just to make you think they are doing something. Your stores look like a Dollar Store, it is so overwhelming all the crap you try to sell people, and then have employees grab four different masking tapes and try to explain the difference while you have to mix 100 gallons of paint. You go to a Mercedes dealership and you see what you are buying, you go to Sherwin Williams to see the "Mercedes" of paint and all you see is gondolas of "crap". Also a good advice would be, to go back to the good old ways where the best candidate for the job was the one getting it and not the tax brake candidate. You are losing a lot of great, hard working, loyal employees due to no career advancement opportunities.
    How could you go around to see the stores (once a year) and go where the District Manager wants you to go to. Make a list of the stores "you" want to see without letting the DM know and you"ll be amazed of what you'll see. Oh and by the way, how come the employees have to be great at customer service and sales but your DMs can't even close a sell and clients don't feel they are trustwhorthy. Check how many companies owe you money yet their accounts are still open and what the DMs are doing to get them to pay their bills. Just a thought!
