I worked at Sherwin-Williams as an intern (Less than a year)

Pros

- Positive/supportive community of people within the company
- Great benefits
- Opportunities for advancement as far as you want to go
- Excellent pay

Cons

Not a 9-5 job if that is what you are looking for

Advice to Management

Make sure all interns get to do all the activities in the intern binder. I met interns who didn't get to travel with sales reps and that was my favorite part!

    I worked at Sherwin-Williams full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benny's are good, they have a pension plan still. The culture among managers is nice. They only promote form within so you are not battling for a promotion with people you do not know, or people who have no experience in the company.

    Cons

Skeleton Crew, Management (for the most part) does not care about its employees, Work load is always changing. If you do so much in a week management will find a way to put more on your shoulders. What? you can't handle more? Then you are gone! What's that? You can handle more? OK, good, that is your new "Norm"....until we pile on more stuff for you to do without helping you find good help, or paying them decently, The process starts all over again.
Here is another Con for the Store Managers or Assistant Managers. Think of this. If you leave the company after 3 or 4 years of running a store, or you leave the company after 25 years of running a store you still only have very little experience in business. SW does not do a lot to prepare people to work other places. They teach you enough to be a drone for SW, but not enough to make you confident in your skills other places. The skills you learn at SW do not translate to much outside of SW. So here you are a young twenty or thirty something year old employee running a store. (Micro Managed from the top level) You have been in that position for 20+ years. How have you grown from your 5th or 6th year to your 20th year? Chances are you probably haven't. You probably just got comfortable doing a job you know how to do. Deal with the BS as it comes, and thank God you have a job.

    Advice to Management

Somewhere between stores, and office jobs you look at the managers you once worked along with and labeled them as expendable. Management needs to do a better job in identifying the needs of stores as far as staffing, and pay for a part time key holder needs to be higher. You can not ask an 18 year old to work for a hair over minimum wage, and give them the responsibility of running the store alone.

Excellent benefits. Average-Good salary. Hires talented staff.

Poor upper management. Hours. Won't pay to keep skilled workers.

Wish upper management remembers what it's like to work in the stores.
