I have been working at Shire full-time

Pros

Excellent benefits, competitive salary, convenient location, opportunities to grow and learn within your role, competitive Bonus program. Good exposure across functions and groups with other staff of your same level.

Cons

Current restructuring has led to a preference of hiring from outside the company instead of promoting from within. Very hierarchical in structure, lots of focus on what your title is rather than respect for your knowledge or experience.

I have been working at Shire full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Friendly employees (below manager levels), satisfactory compensation, but facing downward pressures due to the changing labor market, access to cheaper contract labor, and dwindling product pipeline. Reading these other posts is a bit surprising; do we work for the same company?

    Cons

Unfriendly and over-staffed middle management. The ratio of managers to staff is strangely high given the size of the organization. You often find yourself answering to several leads, managers, and directors for each assignment and NONE of them ever seem to want to talk to each other. Many come from large Pharma backgrounds and are impatient with the realities of what Shire has in place and can afford. They tend to delegate their responsibilities to build and implement strategies, improved business processes, and communications to lower levels of staff. And, God forbid anyone actually read anything!

    Advice to Management

Align business units already; it's been a few years now. New CEO says the right things, but will need to see what changes are put into action. Take responsiblity for your job, your role, and support your staff. Champion change, trust your staff, and quit finding blame.
