I worked at Sierra Club full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The Sierra Club offers an opportunity to do work that really counts. It attracts vibrant, talented people and the club's venerable stature is energizing. Communication is improving and the club is definitely working to break out from its old stifling bureaucracy. The future looks good in that regard.

    Cons

    ...But...

The Sierra Club is a nonprofit ghetto for its staff.

The organization does not really seem to appreciate its people. Salaries are almost an insult -- even in the low-paying nonprofit world. Benefits range from OK...to deplorable. The most ludicrous is the club's "vacation" policy which seems stuck in the early 1900's rather than the 21st century. Two weeks for the first few years? You don't see many organizations anywhere still inflicting that hideous burden on people even in the high paying corporate world. In the non-profit world, its unheard of...and appallingly oppressive.

Management now seems to be trying to raise the quality of life for the staff....but there's a very long way to go before reaching any sort of parity with similar nonprofits.

    Advice to Management

Get with the program on salaries and benefits. No one expects to get rich working for the Sierra Club ...but management REALLY needs to focus on fairness and quality of life for its staff.
