I have been working at Skyhorse Publishing full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I’ve now been at Skyhorse for 2 1/2 years. It’s a great and unique publishing experience, but it’s not for the faint of heart. Being a smaller house, we’re able to react very quickly to the environment and any new publishing trends. That’s both a blessing and a curse. If you’re used to a rigid, structured environment, then it will be tough for you. You have to be willing to adapt and go with the flow. If you can handle...

    Cons

Sometimes we’re so busy in our own roles that we don’t see the bigger picture and it’s to our detriment. Sometimes decisions are made too quickly and then they have to be walked back. With a non-corporate environment, you have to take the good with the bad and roll with the punches. The good far outweighs the bad.

    Advice to Management

The same as I’ve said previously, keep listening to your employees.

There are a lot of moving parts in any company, and staff are supposed to ensure that those moving parts function smoothly. The entire operation can be tested when stakes and pressure are highest, and deadlines critically loom. We at Skyhorse had the opportunity to experience very high stakes, pressure, and deadlines recently when the Mueller Report was released on Thursday, April 18th, and Skyhorse was in a race with...

I worked at Skyhorse Publishing full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Summer Fridays! Free Bagels. The office is super close to Penn Station. 9 to 5:30 work week.

      Cons

It felt a lot like high school... Turnover like you wouldn't believe. Somehow, and I'm not sure how or why.... but apparently working 2 years as an assistant qualifies you to jump to a manager position with little to no managing experience. This place is quite the giggle when it comes to hiring and firing. In the time that I was there the entire publicity department quit, a new team was hired, and then shortly...
