Pros

The only good thing is the money.

Cons

Management is the worst of all the companies I've worked for. You don't get just one boss, you get 2 or 3 of them on you every week. Your store manager and then a market manager. The market manager mainly just complains and calls anytime something wrong happens. Which if something is going wrong in another store 300 miles away, you are going to have to listen to it and it just brings you down. It's really slow and boring but yet they put the words "fun atmosphere" in the application process to trick you. Have never met a person that actually liked the company, talk to any store in the nation and most would tell another employee secretly that it's boring and they are just there to collect a paycheck. Working at any of the stores in Ohio will get you this guaranteed.

Advice to Management

To pay attention when a sales professional tells you something. They are the front line and speak to the customers directly. Also pay attention to what your market managers are telling the sales professionals. The sales professionals should have 1 boss. When you get a bunch of people coming down on you for bad sales numbers, it's hard to get back up. If there is only 1 person like the store manager saying something to you, its a whole lot easier, but when the market manager knows, the whole state knows about it.

    Pros

Unlike many other retail jobs, there is the opportunity to make a decent living at the company if you become proficient at the tricks of the trade. The company does make high quality products which many, and arguably most, of their customers love.

    Cons

The sales process is too scripted. The company demands that you use their branded terminology when discussing the attributes of the beds and bedding items, frequently making interaction with customers awkward.

At some stores, incomplete information is provided regarding warranties and return policies, which results in upset customers who vent their fustrations online. That, in turn, makes it difficult to sell the beds to potential buyers who like to see what others have to say about a product before they purchase.

In an economy that is still struggling, Select Comfort also always seems to be looking for ways to increase prices. That obviously makes it more difficult to sell the products, which are already expensive to begin with.

The company also assumes in its training materials and videos that everyone who comes into look at their beds suffers from back pain or shoulder pain, or constantly tosses and turns at night. The reality is that many customers are just out to replace an old bed and are considering the Sleep Number beds because of good things they have heard about the beds. Too little focus is provided on how a salesperson can convince these individuals to buy a Sleep Number bed versus innerspring mattresses that sell for considerably less.

    Advice to Management

Select Comfort needs to do a better job of taking care of their owners. They should have someone in each market who can respond to customer issues such as bad air compressors, leaking air hoses, or broken remotes as opposed to having the customer figure out what the problems are and request replacement parts which they then have to install. The bad reviews online are hurting the company's business and will continue to do so unless addressed.
