Pros

It's a great product. The idea behind SmartBiz is truly changing the SBA lending space. The team is great. You'll meet people here from all sorts of backgrounds who truly become your friends. Your success is also in your hands. You can determine how well you as an RM if you put your mind to it.

Cons

There is a general lack of trust and respect for the management team. False promises are often made, and the Relationship Manager role is seen as one with a lot of turnover. RMs get burnt out quickly, but new ones are always there to replace them. There isn't much opportunity to move into other roles or be promoted once your time as an RM has come to an end. Management doesn't take the input or advice of the team, leading to low morale. The company has changed a lot in the past year or so. The culture has shifted from one of collaboration and passion, to one of unrealistic expectations, pitting RMs and teams against each other, and overall burnout.

Pros

- Some talented individual contributors and middle managers who genuinely care about small businesses - Flexible hybrid work policy and solid benefits - Opportunities to work in "fintech" - if you can handle the constant chaos

Cons

- Leadership instability and financial mismanagement resulted in 4 rounds of layoffs in 2 years - Technology is far behind modern fintech standards, with minimal automation in place - Reputation problems with the partner and broker community directly hurt deal flow and caused missed targets - Morale is low due to ongoing fear of additional layoffs tied to missed quarterly targets - Below-market pay with no raises for years, first blamed on becoming a bank, now deferred indefinitely until profitability
