I worked at Social Security Administration full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Dedicated employees who care about what they do and keep the American public they serve in mind at all times.

    Cons

Excessive incrementalism and old-school Taylorism-based management philosophy makes this bureaucracy slower than most to change in any real way. Millions are spent on change and improvement planning and R&D efforts only to see the products of those efforts sit on a shelf and collect dust.

    Advice to Management

Get out of your own way. Let the knowledgeable people who work for you do what they know how to do. Accept that change is inevitable as time goes on, and direct it in the most beneficial direction for the organization instead of trying to hold back the flood. Stop the petty empire building and put the organization's health and success as your target.

I worked at Social Security Administration full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits (insurance, vacation, etc); flexible work schedule; younger employees use this as a "gap filler" place to work until something better comes along

    Cons

Little opportunity for advancement outside HQ; opportunities for details & temporary assignments often only told to "favorite" employees and not everyone; preference to hire externally rather than promote from within; salary doesn't always match the area where you live compared to private sector; slow to innovate - stuck in that govt rut

    Advice to Management

Recognition of employees to promote or who have "outside the box" ideas would be nice rather than being stuck in a rut with general government drones would be novel
