Pros

It's an opportunity to serve. It's interesting and challenging work. You learn a lot about yourself and human behavior.

Cons

Pay is limited. You deal with people who can be extremely unpleasant. Employees risk injury every day. You need to have a strong mind. You are surrounded by cursing and vulgarity, which can easily creep into your conduct and conversation. You need to have strength of character to resist that temptation.

Advice to Management

As in most workplaces, there are power struggles that sap the organizations morale. There are gifted people whose talents are underutilized. We have a large gap between the training manual description of the work and the customary and accepted practices of the workers.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at South Carolina Department of Corrections - Columbia, South Carolina full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Job security, meeting new people, it's an adventure every day, opportunity to advance, opportunity to work with some really good people, there's always something new to learn and experience everyday and you feel pretty good when you help inmates and staff see things in a better way. you have an opportunity to make a difference in someone's life, for the netter.

    Cons

We are, most often, reactive instead of pro-active, some of the staff have been there way too long and need to let some new people in the higher ranking positions to take advantage of their fresh eyes and newer ideas, The inmate population is more violent now than 3 or 4 years ago. And, finally, we have too many lazy, short cut taking staff in all areas and positions.

    Advice to Management

Get out of the chair and office, go and talk to your staff. See what they are doing, how they feel about things and find out what ideas/suggestions they have to improve SCDC and it's many missions. And, please, ask the staff in the trenches about policy and post orders changes before you go implementing them, Most people make the changes have no clue what goes on in the institutions or how to do the job, it just sounds good on paper and isn't practical in real life.

You have a constant pay check and unlimited overtime.

    Cons
