I worked at Southern Company as an intern (More than a year)

Pros

Strong Intern development program and fun intern day (R3 Day) to help interns network and see the company culture. It seems as though the company will support you if you want to get additional training for another role. I saw several full-time IT employees also became certified engineers through Southern Company, allowing them to be more effective and generate more value for the corporation (and earning them a pay raise).

Cons

Baxley Georgia has nothing in it, besides Plant Hatch. Strong emphasis is placed on focusing on MIS/IT in college career.

Advice to Management

Some of the "corporate culture" and "strategic mission" type branding comes off as trite when you are sitting in a nuclear power plant.

Management is created through networks, not education/experience.

I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, pension still included, and management is generally very supportive. Pay is targeted to be middle of the market.

    Cons

For better or worse, young white males tend to not be promoted since the company is focused on getting females and minorities promoted into the management pool. Most of the time competent people are found to fill the positions, but occasionally there will be a marginal promotion due to affirmative action.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent about the goals of the company in promoting people. Encouraging young white males to stay when there isn't a serious plan to promote them is only going to lead to a bunch of disgruntled individual contributors in a few years.
