I have been working at Southern Company full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Stable company with good benefits and fair pay. Great people, many of whom spend their entire careers there. Access to great resources, education, organizations, etc.

Cons

Slow moving. Corporate politics can stifle progress and creativity. Many have become complacent, lack motivation.

Advice to Management

To encourage a culture of innovation, leadership must discourage the corporate hierarchy. Executive garages and office/cube location based purely on on job grade reflect an old school way of thinking. Learn from the work environment at today's leading companies.

Southern Company has many caring people.

    Cons

There's a culture where people are sometimes two-faced and very political.

I worked at Southern Company as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Strong Intern development program and fun intern day (R3 Day) to help interns network and see the company culture. It seems as though the company will support you if you want to get additional training for another role. I saw several full-time IT employees also became certified engineers through Southern Company, allowing them to be more effective and generate more value for the corporation (and earning them a pay raise).

    Cons

Baxley Georgia has nothing in it, besides Plant Hatch. Strong emphasis is placed on focusing on MIS/IT in college career.

    Advice to Management

Some of the "corporate culture" and "strategic mission" type branding comes off as trite when you are sitting in a nuclear power plant.
