I have been working at Southwest Airlines full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Travel benefits, mostly friendly people, employees truly care about the company and their jobs. It's very exciting to work in the airline industry. The health benefits are outstanding. The company is very generous with employees.

Cons

Too many consultants and consultant-like employees running around the place who have no clue how to run an airline. Extremely political due to hanging on to "culture" of old days and dealing with unions. Also, running a 24/7 airline operation in nearly 100 cities means anything can happen at anything (which is stressful).

Advice to Management

Flatten the organization. Get rid of strategic planning roles and start hiring or promoting Executives/VPs/Directors who can think strategically. Make educated decisions and stick with them. You can't reach consensus on everything. Stop trying to look like the best place to work and actually *be* a better place to work.

I have been working at Southwest Airlines full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Your co workers, southwest truly does have remarkable people who work there. Everyone in my department is like extended family.

    Cons

reservations has become more about quantity vs. quality its all about how many calls you can complete and selling products to customers vs helping them with what their problem is.
Also reservations is the MOST micro managed department ever. someone is always over your shoulder babysitting you like you are a little kid.

    Advice to Management

This is not pre school we are all capable adults who know how to do our job. Please treat me as such

I worked at Southwest Airlines full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Flight benefits
    Health insurance
    Being outdoors
You can work as much as you want to(OT, shift pick-ups)
    Regular incremental hourly wages

    Cons

    Very political
There are some very lazy workers
    Leadership seems disillusioned and aloof

    Advice to Management

Find a different line of work? There are some hard workind, dedicated people who try to make things better for everone. With the kind of bait-n-switch politics and the other BS managerial tactics that have to be dealt with, it makes things impossible to deal with and very uninviting.
