Pros

Successful company during the worst of times. Excellent employee relations and culture. Best pilot pay (narrowbody) and benefits in the industry. Tremendous flexibility in work schedules. Average 17-18 days off per month. Very military reservist friendly. Above average management pilots and leadership. Stable company and financial balance sheet.

Cons

SWA is in the airline industry. Excessive Government regulation, taxes and fees. System will not alow sick airlines to fail. Not hiring. Economy, coupled with the age 65 retirement rule change will mean excessive time as a first officer (Captain pay is 40-60% higer than FO pay depending upon longevity). Sometimes the company is over conservative with growth which leads to the appearance of not being nimble; missing out on expansion opportunities. No widebodies (big steel), domestic only ops.

Advice to Management

Overall, management has done a great job navigating the "Great Recession." Keeps cards tightly held and maintains above average employee relations. For those that have been with the company awhile, it seems that there are more EVP's, SVP's and VP's than necessary. Good two way communication must remain a must to keeping the culture strong.

    Pros

Health benefits and flying privileges are outstanding!

    Cons

Employees hardly ever came to work and complained all of the time when they did. They did not trust each other or the managers.

    Advice to Management

Try to sincerely build employee morale.

    Pros

Southwest Airlines has a clear mission statement about treating customers both external and internal and they follow it. Southwest does a great job of instilling its culture into every employee. The benefits are outstanding and the pay is respectable. You can change your schedule with the agreement of other employees who are willing to work your shift. Communication from upper management is great.

    Cons

The only downside can be if you are not used to working for an airline. You can not be late or absent without it affecting your status. Airlines do not care if you got in a crash on the way to work. If you are late or absent it does not matter why.

    Advice to Management

Allow employees to advance to a different department after six months.
