Approves of CEO

Pros

Entrepreneurial culture; culture of trust - people aren't micromanaged here.
Surrounded by smart, driven people
Since we're in the business of working with people, employees at the firm are generally friendly, personable, and approachable
Firm takes pride in its 'best practices' and being the gold standard for the industry
Incredible amount of flexibility in terms of time off. Many associates and consultants frequently work from home when family issues arise.

Cons

Passive aggressive culture; if you mess up, people are hesitant to tell you. They'll just smile and tell you 'good job' and then complain about your work to someone else. Tough to get honest feedback around here.

Mentorship isn't the greatest. People are left to figure things out for themselves, so you have to be proactive if you want to be promoted.

A lot of vagueness surrounding promotions, salaries, and bonuses.

In many ways the culture if very much 'the good old boys club'.

Big egos/high maintenance consultants (many of them are former CEOs/bigwigs, so they expect the same treatment at Spencer Stuart - their second career - as in their former positions)

Advice to Management

Management sometimes does things behind the scenes instead of risking 'stepping on people's toes'. Be more open and forthcoming.

Improve professional development within the firm. Give people the tools they need in order to get a promotion.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

Smart and professional people make it a great place to learn. They also have a great benefits package. Many employees have been there for more than 10 or even 20 years, so the company is definitely doing something right.

    Cons

New ideas aren't necessarily encouraged. Instead some departments prefer to do things the way they have always done them. There is also poor collaboration and information sharing between departments.

    Advice to Management

Encourage more open communication between departments, especially between corporate departments and search offices. Consider bringing in a process consultant to improve business flow.

    Pros

Nice people, very professional, decent pay

    Cons

I was not that interested in headhunting. I think that working in industry is more exciting. Also, it seems like most of the top consultants came here as a mid-career change and did not work their way up.

    Advice to Management

    Its a well run place.
