I worked at St Johns County School District full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Monday - Friday schedule, flexible hours, summer hours were convenient and provided a change of pace by visiting other schools for work.

Cons

The starting pay was low but in line with other starting wages for the same position. The 3% FRS contribution made take home pay even lower.

I worked at St Johns County School District full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Depends on where you are located

    Cons

Focus is completely on ELA and math, due to yearly standardized testing; the tests are not at all indicative of what the students know and can do, yet our pay is tied to how well our students perform at the end of the year. Pay is terrible compared to the amount of work we do. They're ALL about the Marzano teacher evaluation model - which doesn't actually show how good of a teacher you are. It's absolutely objective.

    Advice to Management

Start working with the unions and fighting the state government to give teachers better pay. Stop focusing on standardized testing and tying teacher pay to how well students perform. Stop using Marzano to evaluate teachers. Provide more resources to the schools in the district with a lower SES population.

I have been working at St Johns County School District as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You can choose your own schedule. The pay is fairly competitive for the area. The schools are welcoming and happy to have you. Many substitutes have made relationships with administrative staff that have helped them to land full time jobs in the schools.

    Cons

They do not pay for the mandatory training hours you are required to attend before starting the job (2 days worth).
