I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Talented staff (engineers, support staff, and production workers)
Very good middle management
Fantastic products

Cons

Organization is off balance - is overly concerned with short term views of Wall Street.
Highly reactive to both financial markets and economy.
Not particularly employee career friendly and quite unforgiving (very little tolerance for mistakes).
Executive staff has the appearance of not working together, which affects the organization's culture.

Advice to Management

Return to longer term view in governing the direction of the company.
Executive staff visibly work together as a team.
It would be nice if group presidents would be more active in forming divisional culture (many employees wouldn't know their division president if they saw him or her on the street).

I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits. Travel was not an issue. The entry level employees and manufacturing employees are very dedicated.

    Cons

short term thinking, a "check it off" mentality more concerned with speed than quality. Frequent layoffs and many contractors make it impossible to maintain any continuity of corporate knowledge. I believe this is the cause of the product recall.

    Advice to Management

Mr. Starks needs to come back to the office and take back control from the heir apparent. Forget about what Wall Street wants and concentrate on making a good product

I worked at St. Jude Medical full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

a good place for junior engineers to gain experience in medical device industry. Lots of smart people to learn from.

    Cons

upper management focused on the stock price and profit margin. Quality is no longer a top priority. St. Jude Medical has paid tens of millions in fines to DOJ the last few years. Recent lay offs in the hundreds. Not a happy place anymore. Moral is terrible.

    Advice to Management

replace the CEO with someone who has a moral compass and cares about developing and rewarding employees. Stop reducing benefits every year.
