I worked at Starr Companies full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

I spent 5 years with Starr and had a very enjoyable experience. The people are smart, efficient and problem solvers. A great environment!

Cons

By 2010 many senior executives from AIG came over, possibly after waiting for some of the scandal "dust" to settle. With this came the old boys network I had wanted to avoid.
And things simply deteriorated from there.

Advice to Management

To back to problem solving and creative solutions. You were so good at it. Now, all I saw was indecision and finger pointing

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Starr Companies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Large youth culture which Starr strives to support by encouraging and rewarding their study towards the ACII. Active encouragement of all employees CPD. A great balance of ethnic cultures and broad age ranges leads continuous evolution and ideas with market driven targets and cultural changes always leading the way forward. Starr also has a family culture that encourages employees to socialise together

    Cons

To shine in such a large company of strong personalities can sometimes be difficult and leave the quieter or more shy people behind, occasionally missing great and creative ideas. Some managers can sometimes be guilty of turning a blind eye to employee conflicts or personal problems. If someone resigns, bad managerial attitudes have a negative effect on the team as a whole

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to all your team members and not just those who shout the loudest. Be aware of personality changes and address conflicts and staff personal problems to create a positive and happy environment.

I have been working at Starr Companies full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There aren't many. In the past a lot of freedom was given to employees, not so much anymore.

Many staff are genuinely smart and knowledgeable about their fields but seem not to be utilised effectively by senior management.

    Cons

    -Nazi management style.
-Neposistic hiring policy particularly poaching from AIG most of whom would not get jobs anywhere else.
-Managers have built empires and unwilling to change.
    -More IT than insurance people.
-Company does the bare minimum to satisfy stakeholders rather than look to be leaders in the industry.
-Pay is poor compared to peers, bonuses poor and no share scheme to incentives employees for the long term.
-Tends to hire mediocre people because they have less chance of leaving shortly after.
-No ideas or growth plans from management.

    Advice to Management

-Resign and give a competent management team a chance.
