Pros

Well one of the best perks was the almost 3 paid weeks off at Christmas, a week paid off at spring break in March and another paid week off for the fall break. This is a total of almost 5 weeks paid off per year, more than any other school I have every worked for. You don't get regular vacation time because of these breaks, however.

Cons

I was at the school when the president retired and a new one was hired. The new person was very different and the whole mood of the place changed. It went to feeling like a family environment to a cold impersonal place where decisions were made behind closed doors by upper management in secret and told to employees after the fact. People became fearful of their jobs.

Advice to Management

More transparency with decision making. The tactics are now being covered in the press and it reflects negatively on the school. I used to be proud to work there but there have been several very negative stories in the press lately and I lost that pride.

    Pros

Instructors have freedom to teach students using many methods to energize their thought processes. Most administrative heads seem competent.
Campus is clean, well-cared for, good security.

    Cons

Semester feedback questionnaires are given at end of course when the "water is over the dam." They need to be done mid-course.

Mid-course surveys completed by students regularly outed teachers who ridiculed and insulted students. Nasty. Those incapable of modifying their teaching method should be terminated. Tenured math and chemistry instructors were most frequently mentioned but the same behaviors persisted.

While Lunch with The Pres sessions seems like a good idea, instructors and other employees would be foolish to criticize the administration (especially in front of the students.)

    Advice to Management

Pay Adjunct instructors more money. You'll get better talent, even better than tenured profs.

Several department heads have been in their jobs MUCH too long. Rotate some of these positions. They are stale. Defending the old ways of doing things.

Need outreach to seniors, moms and dads to come learn new stuff. The extensive course offerings are a Secret in the community. SCF needs to advertise more to your NON-customers. The high-school graduates will come to SCF automatically. It's the older (potential) students who need business course and refresher training.

I have been working at State College of Florida full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Collegiate School program available for the family of employees.

    Cons

Poor reactive management with unfair practices and minimal consistency and very high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Be consistent with compensation and employee relations. Change culture from a reactive to a proactive work environment., Do not micromanage so much.
