I have been working at State Farm full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good salary and benefits, good first line management support, work-life balance is encouraged.

    Cons

New collaborative spaces and "centralized" decision-making are taking toll on productivity. In the past, mid-level managers could work directly with business partners to get new functionality out the door. Now, everything, including ideas have to go through a central board and be approved a minimum of 18 months before they can be deployed. It's encouraged for developers to stop developing and become experts at documentation.

    Advice to Management

Don't funnel all work through one funnel--centralize deployment, not entire software development lifecycle!

I worked at State Farm full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Incredible benefits, not very competitive pay.

    Cons

Management Hierarchy, (Over)emphasis on insurance education for employee advancement over other skill sets or higher education. Location.
