I have been working at State Farm full-time (More than 10 years)

Pros

Instant credibility with the name brand of State Farm. Loyal, long time policyholders. Highly educated and competent partners in underwriting, claims, and support units. Great products. Easy to sell the value of a great company. Great vision and communication from upper management.

Cons

Highly intense service work distracts from the sales portion of the job. Awkward systems. Many different systems to accomplish simple transactions. Lower commissions than competitors but easier to attract clients so maybe this is a wash.

Advice to Management

Keep moving forward with the technology.

I worked at State Farm full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Learning how business works, i.e. the engineering of an individuals productivity, from the bottom. Taylorism, as it is known in the MBA textbooks.

    Cons

Tethered to a desk. Unhealthy to be sedentary in prime of your life. If you are not at your desk, you are not working. Phone headset, incessant ringing of phone and complaint calls most of the day. Arguing about car value and minutia of claims process over and over again. Manager reviews- either you are too slow and super thorough, or you need to speed up to make your "numbers" look good. Numbers are phone calls, initial settlements, follow ups, all tedious crap.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up. The nature of the cubicle environment will weed out the people that are motivated to do bigger things and advance their career, while retaining those that could care less (or are beaten for whatever reason).
